Causes of Hair Loss in Cats
PARASITES
One of the most common reasons for hair loss in cats is parasites, such as fleas and ticks. These pesky critters can cause intense itching and scratching, which can pull out clumps of fur. Fortunately, there are several treatments available for parasites, including flea and tick medication that can be purchased from your veterinarian or pet store.
In addition to treating your cat, it's important in home cleaning as well. Vacuum your floors and furniture regularly, wash your pet's bedding on a hot cycle every week, and sprinkle sodium bicarbonate on all floors and upholstered furniture to dehydrate any remaining parasites.
RINGWORM
Ringworm is a fungal infection that can cause hair loss in cats. It's highly contagious and can be spread to other animals and humans. Treatment usually consists of a topical cream, although severe cases may require medication.
STRESS
In rare cases, stress and anxiety can cause cats to over-groom, resulting in bald patches. This condition, known as feline psychogenic alopecia, can be treated by making changes to your cat's environment and possibly prescribing medication.
ALLERGIES
Allergies are the most common cause of hair loss in cats. Your cat may be allergic to certain foods, pollen, insect bites, or medications. If allergies are the cause of your cat's hair loss, your veterinarian may prescribe medication to treat the allergy.
PREAURICULAR ALOPECIA
Preauricular alopecia is a common condition in cats that causes hair loss between the ears and the eyes. In long-haired cats, it may be difficult to notice.
GENETICS
Some breeds of cats are genetically hairless, such as the sphinx. However, if your cat is experiencing hair loss due to a developmental defect, it may also have other abnormalities, such as abnormal teeth, claws, eyes, or skeletal malformation.
Hair loss in cats can be a concern for pet owners, but it can usually be treated. Your veterinarian can help diagnose the cause of your cat's hair loss and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. With patience and care, your cat's fur will grow back, and you can resume cuddle time with your furry friend.
